How to Set Up a CS 1.6 Dedicated Server

A lightweight HLDS server is easy to run and customize. Here’s a safe, quick setup.

1) Install HLDS

• Windows: use SteamCMD to install hlds for cstrike.
• Linux: install via SteamCMD into a non-root user’s home.

2) Basic run

hlds.exe -game cstrike -console -noipx -port 27015 +maxplayers 20 +map de_dust2

3) Port forwarding

• Forward UDP 27015 on your router to the server IP.
• Allow through firewall (Windows Defender / iptables/ufw).

4) Essential configs

• server.cfg: hostname, rcon_password, rates
• mapcycle.txt: rotating list of maps
• motd.txt: rules and contact

5) Install AMXX & plugins

Follow the AMXX guide then add admin tools, anti-rush, AFK manager from Plugins.

6) Best practices

• Keep backups of cstrike/ configs.
• Avoid untrusted binaries; stick to reputable plugins.
• Run logs and watch performance (CPU/RAM).
